Gas is on us, but maker / taker fees keep the lights on.
Maker orders add liquidity to the book and pay the lower Maker Fee. Taker orders remove liquidity by matching against existing orders and incur the higher Taker Fee.

Fee math example
Imagine trading $1,000 on the first tier.
- Maker: fee = 1,000 × 0.00025 = $0.25
- Taker: fee = 1,000 × 0.001 = $1.00
Fees are deducted from the quote asset.
